The megacity Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Following Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "critical" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Readings

Several parts of the city registered an pollution measurement over 500, which represents ten times the safe level recommended by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times above acceptable limits.

Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that blankets the metropolis as colder weather begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the newly elected regional administration appealed to the supreme court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Court Verdict and Implementation

Despite concerns of environmental and health campaigners, judges complied with the request, stipulating that green firecrackers could be set off during specific hours throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Many monitoring devices throughout the capital recorded contamination peaking around late evening to the most severe levels seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Effects

The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Problem

Extremely elevated concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a major issue for over a decade and a half, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

During the festival period, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been documented to spike to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

The problem in Delhi is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from agricultural fires in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.

Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air sets in.

Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the capital region is enormous, according to various studies.

These hazardous conditions leads to high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

The pollution is projected to be causing approximately 10k early fatalities per year in the capital.
